CranioSacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a light touch manual therapy that works to treat the central nervous system and the fluid surrounding the cranium, to affect multiple structural and physiological systems in attaining greater health and well being. As the name implies, it involves mobilizing restrictions within the cranium - skull, face and jaw, and the sacrum, the spine and the cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds the nervous system and the brain, protecting and nourishing the nervous system. However, because of the anatomical and physiological connections, it is really a whole body approach. This is an effective method for treating a variety of problems in sensory, motor function, intellectual and emotional issues.

Craniosacral therapy helps release tension deep in the body and relieves pain and dysfunction. By regulating the autonomic nervous system through CST, the body can enhance its functions in eliminating pain and stress, movement restrictions, migraines and headaches, strengthen resistance to disease, allow for relaxation, better digestion, help with learning difficulties, ADHD, healing, regulating moods and improve sleep, clearer thinking, and more.

What causes problems in the craniosacral system?

The craniosacral system is sensitive to different changes happening in our body, which all can cause blockage in the fluid that surrounds the nervous system. Examples of obstructions are tense muscles, incorrect posture, emotional stress, illness, back issues, scoliosis, head injuries, even minor injuries, infections,  structural imbalance and more.

How does craniosacral therapy work?

We start with a diagnosis to examine the movement of the neural fluid and evaluating it. The fluid motility test is done by listening deeply to the patient's body, learning where the obstructions are in the craniosacral system. As CST aims to address the primary cause of the pain and gain lasting results, often this can lead to focus away from the location of the pain itself, to resolve the underlying cause.

The treatment itself exerts a gentle pressure that does not exceed 5 grams. The therapist gently places her hands on the obstruction areas to release existing obstructions.

Each session alleviates restrictions to restore inner flow. As a result, the entire body is integrated towards seamless communication and better ”team work”. As in other areas of holistic medicine, CST helps the body awaken its self-healing ability, regenerates the vitality of the brain and nervous system, and the whole body.

The concept of cranial bone movement was developed by William Garner Sutherland DO and further developed in the 1970’s through the research performed by John E. Upledger DO and associates at the University of Michigan.

Somato-Emotional Release Therapy

Somato Emotional Release (SER) was pioneered by Dr. Upledger and is one of the many offspring of CranioSacral Therapy. Dr. Upledger developed this form of therapy as the result of years of documentation and clinical experience. He observed that emotions are not confined to the brain, the heart or hidden in silences. They have a profound impact on the body, health and general well-being.

During any bodywork session, when the physical release happens, images, emotions, memories and/or sensations, associated with the physical pain or trauma, might arise. This physical healing process is helped by allowing the emotional healing to occur at the same time. In Somato Emotional Release, therapeutic imagery and dialogue are used to facilitate the necessary release of the body’s memory. The session enlists the support of the person’s Inner Physician, Inner Wisdom, or any other aspect of their body and belief system. Then full healing can finally occur.

Somato Emotional release has also proven helpful to transform life patterns. Many people come at a period of transition, i.e., wanting to change careers or at the end of a relationship. Other clients come to a session aware of a particular situation or behavior they wish to change. Unfortunately, their best intentions and efforts have not been enough and they seem caught in an endless and discouraging loop. Somato Emotional Release helps them connect the dots and make the change happen, sometimes with only a couple of sessions.

When your body feels safe and at ease, it can do important inner-work, like allowing your breathe to travel deeper, open more space in the heart, and amplify the courage to deal with life circumstance, as well as difficult emotions and memories that come up. This unique body work helps acknowledge and work with feelings and memories that have been residing in the body and are ready to let go.

Soma-Emotional body therapy is a gentle noninvasive hands-on therapy performed on a massage table. This approach supports the body to allow its natural healing process to bring you back to vibrant health.

Glial Cell and Brain Work

New research shows that glial cells are essential partners of neurons in nearly every aspect of central nervous system (CNS) development, function, homeostasis, healing, and pathology.

An essential part of craniosacral therapy (CST) is to optimize the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) into and out of the CNS. Glia produce CSF, form passageways for the flow of CSF, and regulate the flow of CSF. Glia also have many other critical functions within the CNS, some of which are: modulating neural signaling, helping control CNS blood flow, forming a CNS-wide communication network, and producing nerve fiber insulation (myelin). Glia are also part of the peripheral nervous system (PNS).

Glial cells form an interconnected matrix throughout the entire central nervous system that is fused to the craniosacral system. Tad Wanveer developed and provided a model in which this interconnection helps to explain how craniosacral therapy reaches into the central nervous system to facilitate improved health and function.
